Moments of Intersection Part 2
spirithp
“So. Which one do you want?” Anakin asked Obi-Wan as they walked out of the council chamber.
“Padawan, isn’t that always my decision?”
“Well of course. I just want to prepare myself for whatever hell I’m going to be put through.”
“Does it matter? We don’t know which one is worse. We just know one’s a Senator and one’s a Duchess. They’re both escort missions of the same nature. Most members of the elite society are stuck up so don’t take anything they say personally and just get through the mission.”
“So you don’t care.”
“No, I do not.”
“Well…” Anakin was thinking. Obi-Wan could tell the next thing out of his mouth was going to be stupid, “Which word do you like better?”
“What?”
“Duchess or Senator. Which word do you like better.”
“Is this how you decide everything, Anakin?”
“Not everything…” Obi-Wan sighed.
“Fine, I’ll bite. Duchess indicates royal family, so born with a silver spoon in their mouth. Snob from the beginning. Senator means money and manipulative enough to get elected.”
“You see no good in people.” Anakin interjected.
“Of course I see good in people. I’ve met the most humble of Senators and royalty in the galaxy. I’ve also met the most greed and idiotic.”
“So which is worse.”
“In my experience, royalty.” Obi-Wan sighed. “I’ll let you off easy. I’ll take the Duchess, you can have the Senator.”
Anakin rolled his eyes and sarcastically replied, “Gee, thanks Master.”

10 Years Later
“So then I’m running all over the ship trying to find her. I finally found her in the control room, laying stunned on the floor.” A gasp from the one-man audience was audible, but Obi-Wan continued his story without pause. “I fought off all the bad guys who were really confused since I was dressed like a bad guy, too. Once they were all gone I went over to her to make sure she was ok. She woke up and punched me in the face since I was dressed like a bad guy.”
“HA! You got beat up by a girl, Dad!” Ian giggled as he leaned backward, keeping his legs crossed and his hands on his knees as he lay down fully then popped back up quickly.
“Girls can beat guys up. Look at your Aunt Siri. She’ll stalk you like a Corellian sand panther,” he said getting on his hands and knees in a catlike pose, “and pounce!” he leaped at Ian who squealed and quickly moved out of Obi-Wan’s way starting a wrestling match all over the common room floor.
Obi-Wan finally gave into the child and let him win, Ian sitting on his chest while he lay flat on his back.
“So what happened next?” Ian asked, waiting for the epic conclusion of the story.
“Well I pulled off the cloth from my head, and she saw it was me. She helped me up and we kissed. The rest is history.” He gazed off into space as if remembering the rest of the story, but not vocalizing it.
“Ewwww. That’s gross.” Ian stuck out his tongue. Kissing was still disgusting to the eight year old.
“Ok boys, story time’s over. Bedtime.” Satine strolled in from finishing the dishes, wiping her hands on a towel.
“Mooom! I don’t wanna!” Ian whined.
“Yeah, Mooom!” Obi-Wan echoed, pouting at her. Satine rolled her eyes.
“I’m a single mother of two.”
“Mom’s annoyed. We better listen. Ill race you to see who can put their PJ’s on faster!” Obi-Wan challenged enthusiastically.
“Ok, GO!” Ian sprinted towards his room and slammed the door.
Satine stood at the feet of Obi-Wan’s sprawled out body. “You’re losing your race.” He ignored her.
“Ah, this looks familiar. Except we were in opposite positions the last time this happened.” He smirked up at her, “Be careful. The next step is a punch in the face.”
“That’s spousal abuse. I’ll call the cops on you.” She threw the washcloth at him and crossed her arms.
“Call them,” He sat up for a moment then grabbed her hand yanking her down with him, “I can handle them.”
She let him pull her down on top of him and raise his lips to hers.
“Ok you two keep it G-Rated, please!” Anakin walked in as if nothing was happening, sat on the couch and turned on the Holonet, “This is why I don’t like coming over, I never know what I’m gonna walk in on.”
“Then you shouldn’t walk in.” Satine suggested and got up, offering Obi-Wan a hand, which he took, “Where’s Padme?”
“Last minute conference call. Leia and Luke are both already in bed. I’ve nothing else to do but bother you. So what do you two want to do tonight?” They both looked at each other then back at Anakin. “How about a movie?”
“Yeah I suppose.” Obi-Wan agreed. This was Anakin and Padme’s last night staying on Mandalore with them thank the gods. Living in the same house as Anakin had been driving him nuts, as it had when they’d lived together at the Temple.
“Movie? How about Sex and the City?” Padme walked in happily and sat next Anakin grabbing his hand and lacing her fingers with his.
“No.” Kenobi and Skywalker responded in unison.
“Well I say yes. It’s girl’s choice.” Satine smiled at Padme.
“WHAT? It was girl’s choice last night.” Anakin said, outraged.
“News flash honey: it’s always girl’s night.” Padme sing-songed to him. Anakin looked to Obi-Wan for support, he just shrugged in defeat.
“Then it’s settled.” Satine popped in the movie while Obi-Wan quickly put Ian to bed and they all sat together, the boys in the middle. The girls snuggled into their respective husbands’ chests.
Anakin left about half an hour in after the first sex scene started, looking disgusted.
“What’s the matter, Skywalker? Can’t handle watching someone else do it?” Satine mocked.
“It’s disgusting that you can. You guys are a bunch of pervs. I’m going to bed.” He waved a hand dismissively at them and walked out of the room.
“Just wash your hands, Anakin!” Obi-Wan yelled after him, chuckling.
When the movie ended both girls turned to Obi-Wan for his opinion.
“It was so boring, girls have too many issues. Who just abandons their bride at the altar though? So what if you’re scared, just man up and do it. If you proposed to her and did all the preparations it’s not like you’re gonna regret marrying her.” He ranted.
“Aww, how dedicated.” Satine smiled, rolling her eyes, and patted his chest, “You overanalyze everything, including movies.”
“I’m just saying.”
“Want to watch the second one? Sex and the City marathon?” Padme suggested.
“I’m all Sex and the City’d out,” Satine leaned up to give Obi-Wan a kiss goodnight, “You two feel free to stay up and watch it, I’ve already seen it.”
She left the room and they put in the sequel. After ten minutes, Padme looked over at Obi-Wan and didn’t look away. Instead of looking back to the movie she just stared at him.
“May I ask why you’re staring at my face?”
“I’m looking at your beard.” He looked away from the movie now they were face to face.
“It’s not a new edition. Why so intrigued?”
“I never could decide if I liked it or not.”
“Well you and Satine agree then. One day she says she loves it, the next day she wants me to shave it off.”
“Speaking of Satine, do you ever wonder if you married the right person?” Padme switched subjects quickly, becoming extremely interested in Satine suddenly.
“Well let’s just forget about the whole beard conversation then.” Obi-Wan smiled at her, and she looked a little hurt. “Hey, I’m just kidding. No I don’t wonder a day in my life. Why, do you?”
“Oh…no of course not. I don’t wonder either.” She turned back to the holovid, as if extremely interested suddenly.
“Yes, you do. You wouldn’t have brought it up if you didn’t. Is there something going on with you and Anakin?”
“No. Well…yes. Kind of. It sounds terrible, but things just made so much more sense during the war. We saw each other every once in a while and it always had to be secretive. It was really fun. Ever since you two defeated Sidious and the war ended, we’re together a lot more.”
“It that bad?”
“Well, no. I guess I just realize how young and stupid I was. I never really gave myself a chance to date other guys. What if I would’ve been happier with someone else? I have nothing to compare Anakin to.”
“I thought you dated that one guy, Palo.”
“Yeah, but that was like pre-teen dating. Holding hands and sitting next to each other on the bus.”
“Well you should be able to tell who your true love is just by holding their hand!” Obi-Wan said jokingly holding his hand up poetically with a serious look on his face. She gave him an unappreciative look and he smiled at her, “I was only kidding.”
“I know. I see you and Satine and you two look really happy. You two know you’re right together because you experienced time apart while you weren’t dating. You just let yourself be single.”
“I don’t know if you remember but back then I wasn’t exactly allowed to date.”
“You think I believe that you didn’t break the rules?” She looked back at him, expecting him to deny it.
“Good point. Well, who would you have dated besides him?”
“I…” She tore her eyes away from him again, back to the holo. He turned away from her too, deep in thought. He thought back through their history together. He’d always liked her, even loved her but he didn’t want to get in her way. They’d had lots of fun on the ship to Tatooine, Coruscant, and Naboo. They’d met again 10 years later when he and Anakin had been assigned to protect her, she’d spent much more time with Anakin than him, but they’d kept a good relationship. As the years passed and they’d both gotten married to their significant others there had been more closeness between them with babysitting or keeping each other company when they were lonely. There had been many other things along the way; smiles that were a little to happy, glances that lasted a little too long, hugs that were a little too comfortable, and dances that were a little too in sync. He’d unconsciously noticed these things, but it had never come to the forefront of his mind.
Were all these subtle hints pointing to what she was suggesting now?
“What are you suggesting?”
“Just never mind.” They were silent for a moment.
“You think we would’ve worked out?” He asked seriously, hoping she would look at him, but she didn’t.
“I don’t know. Sometimes I wonder.” She sat still for a second then started ranting feverishly, waving her hands as she talked,“Don’t get me wrong, I love Anakin, I just wonder I how things could’ve been different. You and Satine never fight and you’re always so sweet and understanding and you just get each other. Anakin doesn’t understand me, and he always has to make comments about my political views, and how much more he knows about things. He doesn’t really respect my opinion or care about it. Sometimes I tell you things I won’t tell Anakin because I know you won’t flip out.” She took a large breath after her rant, finally looking him in the eye for a second, then looking down immediately afterwards.
“First of all Satine and I fight sometimes, it’s not like we’re perfect. It’s ok not to tell Anakin everything.”
“I bet you tell Satine everything.”
“Yes, I do. But Anakin’s not exactly the calmest person.”
“But Anakin and I fight. A lot. And I try to keep it from Luke and Leia but they know it. I worry we’ll fight so much we’ll break up.” Her eyes were shining in the light of the TV as she hung her head, “I don’t know if he and I are perfect after all.”
“Hey, look at me. Maybe you two jumped into this too quickly, but I know he loves you; you’re all he ever talks about. He didn’t turn to the dark side because he had you. He and I defeated Palpatine because he couldn’t leave you. Maybe it’s not the same as before, but you could be in a transition to a different type of love. Before it was exciting and dangerous and now you’re moving into real married love. You hate each other sometimes but you’d do anything for the other person when they need you be cause you need them just as bad.”
“I should be happy he’s here now,” she moped, “I get to see him everyday, I should be thankful.”
“It’s just a change. Satine had to get used to me being around all the time too.”
“I feel guilty because I’m not happy. And that I keep thinking I made the wrong decision.”
“Padme. I liked you a lot when we met, and again when I was protecting you, but you seemed more interested in Anakin so I didn’t say anything to you. I didn’t want to complicate everything. You sealed the deal with Anakin on that escort mission. If we had seen each other, you’d still have chosen Anakin.” He put his finger under her chin and pushed it up so their eyes met, “You and fate made your decisions and everything worked out. Nothing would’ve changed.”
“I thought the future was always in motion.” She smiled sheepishly. He smiled back.
“You caught me.”
“Living with Jedi has taught me well.” The both sat in their lighthearted moment, dispelling the seriousness in the air.
“The time for us has passed, Padme,” He put his hand on hers, “but I’m always going to be there for you for whatever you need.”
“Anything I need?” She smirked at him suggestively.
“I’m a faithful man, Padme. Nice try though.” He grinned back, and leaned forward to kiss her forehead.
She wrapped her arms around him the second his lips left her forehead and pressed her head in his chest. He was stunned for a moment but then wrapped his arms around her, too. For a moment her being nestled in his chest made sense. It felt natural, as if this was exactly how it was supposed to be. No Satine and no Ian, just him and her. The thought and the feeling scared him. She belongs to Anakin. He pulled away and looked down at her and she looked up to him.
“What?” She looked puzzled.
“Nothing.” He stood up, his hand in hers again to pull her up, “This movie sucks, it’s not near as good as the show, or the first one.” She laughed and let herself be pulled to stand in front of him.
“I know you love Sex and the City.”
“Don’t tell Anakin, I have a reputation to protect.”
“I won’t.”
Obi-Wan turned off the Holo and they hugged again. They pulled away slowing in opposite directions toward their rooms, their hands lingered together for as long as they could before their fingers had to part. The second his hand left hers, he suddenly felt normal again. Like he was back in his world. The thought clung to his mind for the remainder of his walk and bedtime ritual until he climbed into bed.
“How was the movie?” Satine rolled over sleepily to face him.
“It sucked. Way worse than the first. Not that I like Sex and the City. It’s awkward.” She smiled at him.
“You love it, don’t deny it. I won’t tell anyone your dirty secret.” When he didn’t say anything back, she opened her eyes and looked at him directly. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing really. Just thinking. Do you ever get the feeling that something is just…perfect? That it was meant to be?”
She closed her eyes again smiling to herself more than him. “Every time I look at you.”
His mouth mirrored hers and he leaned over to give her a goodnight kiss.
“I love you.”
“I love you too.”
The End.
